Aluminum vs steel valve covers is one of those debates that sounds like a simple material question but really isn't. The two are built differently, and those differences show up in three areas that matter on a real build. How the flange holds up to installation and repeated service, how much room the cover leaves for the valvetrain underneath, and how the finished engine bay looks with the hood open.

Both seal well when they're made right. Stamped steel gets there through heavy-gauge material that resists the flange distortion cheaper thin covers are known for. Die cast aluminum gets there through the natural rigidity of a cast flange, and adds internal clearance and styling options that stamping physically can't produce. The right pick depends on what your build demands from the cover, not on one material being better than the other.

PROFORM Stamped Steel Valve Covers

PROFORM's stamped steel valve covers are made from heavy-gauge steel that is 20% thicker than typical aftermarket valve covers. That thickness matters most at installation time. Thin flange covers distort when fasteners get over-torqued, and a distorted flange is where oil leaks start. The heavier gauge resists that distortion and keeps the flange flat against the gasket through repeated service.

Air breather and PCV grommets are included on every pair, and oil restricting baffles come pre-installed on most models so the PCV system stays correctly routed. Stamped covers come in either tall or production height, also called short or stock.

  • 440-881 ? Shark Gray LA/Small Block MOPAR -- confirmed, with one nuance: its emblem is hand-painted deep black, not deep blue. The article says all the LA/SB options feature the "deep blue" Omega M. That's true for 440-811 (B/RB), but 440-881 is black. Small fix needed.

Start with what your build actually needs from the cover.

Go with stamped steel if you're after a period-correct factory look on a classic Chevy small block or big block. It's also the natural choice for a mild valvetrain that doesn't need extra room inside the cover, for applications where a short production height cover is required, or for any Chrysler build, since our Officially Licensed MOPAR® lineup is stamped steel exclusively. And if the cover is coming on and off for regular valvetrain service, the thicker flange holds its seal through repeated installs better than thinner covers ever will.

Go with die cast aluminum when the valvetrain has outgrown a stock profile. Stud girdles, roller rockers, and tall valve springs all need internal clearance that only a deeper cast profile provides. Aluminum is also the pick for show builds where styling matters as much as function, for any LS application (our LS lineup is die cast exclusively), and for big block Chevy builds where intake-side bolt access has always been a fight. Our die-cast intake side design solves that problem outright. Same story if the finish or emblem treatment you want only exists in the aluminum lineup.

For most street performance builds, this decision comes down to clearance and looks, not sealing. Our heavy-gauge stamped steel seals well enough that nobody needs to choose aluminum just for that. Where aluminum earns its place is when the valvetrain needs room to breathe or the engine bay needs to make a statement.
